An over-the-range microwave is a microwave, a hood, and a hanging cabinet all at once. A range hood install is a different opening and a different vent. Measure the cabinet, the cooktop gap, and the exhaust path before anyone lifts the unit.
Use the range hood installation page when you are hanging a hood only. Stay here when the replacement is an over-the-range microwave.
Measure the opening, the gap, and the vent
Record the cabinet width, the depth of the upper cabinets, and the height from the cooktop to the underside of the cabinet. Manufacturer minimums for that gap are in the installation sheet, not in a countywide rule. A unit that fits the old opening on paper can still place its vent outlet in a different spot.

- The current mounting plate, if one is still on the wall
- The vent: roof cap, wall cap, or recirculating damper
- The receptacle location inside the cabinet
San Diego kitchens do not share one layout. A 1970s El Cajon galley often has a shallow cabinet and a wall vent. A newer Carlsbad remodel may already have a 30-inch opening and a roof jack. A downtown condo may only support recirculating mode because there is no exterior chase. Recirculating still needs the charcoal filters and the damper plate the maker specifies.
Do not assume the old microwave’s width is the opening. Trim, a spice rack, or a boxed soffit can steal an inch.
Power and mounting are not DIY guesses from this page
Most over-the-range units want a dedicated 120-volt receptacle inside the cabinet. Confirm what is actually there. A cheater cord draped over the cabinet is not an installation plan. Electrical work beyond plugging into an existing matching receptacle belongs to a qualified electrician when the circuit is wrong. This brand does not perform electrical work.
The mounting plate has to hit structure. Drywall anchors in a tile backsplash are how units sag. The independent installer you match with should find the studs or the cabinet floor supports named in the sheet, then hang the plate to that sheet, not to the old holes if those holes are in the wrong place.
Vent conversion, damper orientation, and blower direction are model-specific. A blower left in the wrong orientation will dump cooking air into the cabinet. That is an install defect, not a later “microwave repair.”
No verified countywide permit rule for this swap appears in the approved sources for this guide. Ask the installer which local authority covers the property, then confirm any permit question with that city or with the County for an unincorporated address.
What to put in the match request
Say that you need over-the-range microwave installation, not a generic appliance hookup. Include the new model’s exact model number, the old unit’s width, whether the kitchen currently vents outside, and whether the cooktop is gas or electric. Access notes matter in stacked condos and gated buildings.
Repair Pro San Diego matches homeowners with insured independent technicians through appliance installation. We do not hang the microwave, stock brackets, or set a fee. Ask the matched pro about their diagnostic or trip charge, whether installation is quoted as a package, and whether you receive that quote in writing before they open the box.
California appliance repair businesses register with BHGS. Confirm a dealer on the DCA lookup.
If the new unit later fails to heat, that is a microwave repair visit, not a callback on the mounting plate unless the install itself is in dispute.
When to call us
If you need an over-the-range microwave hung in a San Diego County kitchen and the opening, vent, and power notes above are ready, match with a licensed local appliance pro. Call (858) 988-7787 to leave a voicemail requesting a match with a local appliance repair pro. The technician you are matched with inspects the opening, quotes in writing, and does the work.
