A garbage disposal that hums without grinding has power at the motor and a flywheel that will not turn. That is a jam or a seized bearing, not a mystery. The reset button is a different first step. The hex-key turn named in the model instructions is the jam step.
If you have not tried the reset the maker names, start with how to reset a garbage disposal. If the unit is a Moen, use the Moen humming page. Stay here when the motor hums after reset and the flywheel is locked.
Cut power before you look into the sink
Switch the wall switch off and cut the circuit at the breaker. Humming means the windings are live when the switch is on. Do not reach into the splash guard with the unit energized. Do not use your fingers as a wrench.
Look down the drain with a flashlight. If you can see a fork, bone, or fruit pit, lift it with tongs after power is confirmed off. That is an owner retrieval. It is not a teardown.
Many continuous-feed units, including common InSinkErator and Waste King housings, have a hex socket in the center of the bottom. The maker’s sheet names the Allen size. With power off, that key can free a locked flywheel. Turn it both directions. If it will not budge, stop. Forcing the key until it rounds out is how a jam becomes a motor job.
Restore power only after the key is removed and the splash guard is back. Run water, then tap the switch once. If it hums again, kill power. Do not hold the switch on against a locked rotor.
A leak at the sink flange or dishwasher tailpiece is a different complaint. Park that on a leak visit. This page is sound without grind.
When humming is no longer an owner jam
The motor can hum with a broken hammer, a worn bearing, or a failed start circuit. Those are not hex-key fixes. A unit that spins freely with the key but still only hums under power is past the jam.
Badger 5 and similar builder-grade units in East County tract homes are often at the end of their service life when the bearing growls. Continuous-feed InSinkErator units in coastal condos more often jam on fibrous waste and then reset. Neither story is a diagnosis until the technician sees the housing.
Do not pour chemical drain opener into a disposal. Do not run the dishwasher into a humming unit. Those steps add a chemical or flood problem to a mechanical one.
If the disposal is a hardwired unit and the reset is not where the sheet shows, leave the electrical box closed.
What a matched technician inspects
The independent technician you match with should confirm power, the jam, the reset, then the motor. They may free a jam you could not see, replace the unit, or repair a leak at the flange while they are under the sink. Replacement versus repair is a written quote, not a rule of thumb from this page.
Repair Pro San Diego matches you with insured local technicians for garbage disposal repair. We do not stock grinders and do not perform the work. Ask about the diagnostic fee and whether it is credited toward the repair.
Confirm BHGS registration on the DCA lookup.
If the rest of the sink drains slowly after the disposal is quiet, say so. The trap and the house drain are a plumbing path. Appliance work on the disposer does not automatically clear a clogged stack.
